About the event
In preparation for this year’s Met Gala, Reparative Reading is hosting a four week book club featuring, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity by Monica Miller.
The Met Gala will be organized into 12 characteristics of Black dandy, an approach inspired by a 1934 Zora Neale Hurston essay called “The Characteristics of Negro Expression.”
The Black American expression of freedom, especially through style, has become the most imitated facet of American culture. Every season runways showcase inspirations from the hood, inspirations from Black teenagers, inspirations from Black creators. Now, with “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” The Met Gala is crediting Black style, highlighting Black literature, and sharing Black history.
Join us every Thursday in April at Byas and Leon (404 Tompkins Ave, BK,NY), 7 - 8:30pm.
* Guests are encouraged to read the assigned pages before each book club.
